Metode penelitian dan pengembangan (R&D) digunakan apabila peneliti bermaksud menghasilkan produk tertentu, dan sekaligus menguji keefektifan produk tersebut. Dengan metode R&D diharapkan dapat ditemukan dan diuji masyarakat. Prkembangan teknologi di berbagai bidang seperti otomatif, pesawat terbang, elektronika, komputer, kedokteran, obat-obatan, kontruksi bangunan dan lain-lain adalah produk dari R&D. Metode penelitian ini bersifat longitudinal, sehingga penelitian dilakukan secara bertahap, dan setiap tahap mungkin digunakan metode yang berbeda.
